How to Help Someone in Crisis

Do

  • โ€ขListen fully without advising or trying to fix
  • โ€ขTake what they say seriously
  • โ€ขAsk directly โ€” Are you thinking about ending your life?
  • โ€ขStay with them physically or by phone
  • โ€ขHelp them connect with a crisis service
  • โ€ขFollow up after the immediate moment passes
  • โ€ขTake care of yourself too โ€” this is hard

Avoid

  • โ€ขLeave them alone if they may be in danger
  • โ€ขPromise to keep what they share a secret
  • โ€ขArgue with or dismiss their feelings
  • โ€ขMinimise โ€” You have so much to live for
  • โ€ขTry to solve everything in one conversation
  • โ€ขReact with shock or visible judgment
  • โ€ขGive up on them

You Are Not Alone

Whatever you are going through, there are people who want to help. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.
